Course Overview

Accounting, the process of measuring, processing, and sharing financial and other information about businesses and corporations, is often referred to as the language of business. Understanding this language allows accountants to contribute to all businesses, and to translate the requirements for sustainable and scalable success. Armed with such skills, accountants can apply their knowledge in any number of dynamic industries.

ASA's Bachelor of Professional Accounting is a rigorous, industry-focused program designed to develop confident, work-ready graduates equipped with analytical, conceptual, and technical skills. With a strong emphasis on professional and contemporary practices, this course prepares students to become future leaders in the accounting profession and broader business community by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world application in a business context.

The Bachelor of Professional Accounting will enable you to understand the challenges and issues facing the accounting profession at present. It will also help you meet the requirements for membership of accounting professional bodies, including CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). The degree is fully accredited by each of these bodies.

Entry Requirements

Admissions Criteria  

Students wishing to gain entry to an ASA Institute of Higher Education undergraduate course must meet at least one of the following entry criteria.

  1. Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent. For full list of equivalencies please refer to Appendix 1 – ASA Country Specific Undergraduate Academic Requirements in the Student Admissions Policy – hyperlink to policy
  2. Satisfactory completion of an approved Tertiary Preparation Program, Tertiary Orientation Program, or a Foundation Year Program through an accredited institution of higher education offered at Australian Universities, TAFE Institutes or government approved Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)  
  3. Satisfactory completion of one year of accredited full-time study in a related discipline at a registered Australian provider of tertiary education at Certificate IV or higher level.

International applicants are only eligible to enrol as full-time student and must be 18 years of age or over at the time that they commence the course for which they have applied.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Any student with prior learning may submit appropriate evidence and apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. ASA may award credit towards achievement of a qualification or award for various forms of prior learning by comparing a student’s current level of skills and knowledge against unit learning outcomes.

ASA may, at its discretion, recognise the validity of other forms of training or education, providing they are deemed equivalent to, or meet, the AQF standards. For further information please review the Recognition to Prior Learning Policy.

Fees and Scholarships

Tuition Fees

ASA Tuition fees are charged on a 'per unit of study' basis. The number of units of study are specified within the Letter of Offer provided to each student*.  

Students must pay their fees for each study period in advance and in accordance with their LoO which provides admission to the course. The LoO indicates all due dates for fee payments during the course enrolment.

Other Costs

All other fees associated with studying at ASA are non-tuition fee related and will only be charged dependent on the individual student circumstances, these include but are not limited to:  

  • Advanced Standing Assessment (post-enrolment)  
  • Replacement of Official documents (testamur or transcripts)
  • Late Payment fee
  • Replacement Student ID
  • Replacement for lost or damaged equipment
  • Payment plan fee

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Professional Accounting comprises twenty-four (24) units of core units and electives over 100, 200 and 300 levels to meet the requirements of with the Australian Qualifications Framework (Level 7), and Higher Education Standards Framework. Candidates can choose to study part-time or full time.

This course commences with six (6) core units and two (2) Specialisation units at the 100 level that provide students with a strong grounding in the knowledge, skills and application required for accounting practice. These first-year units are followed by the next set of two (2) core units and six (6) Specialisation units covering more specific accounting and business concepts at the 200 level. The final set of two (2) core units, three (3) Specialisation units, two (2) electives covering advanced applications and internship, and one (1) capstone unit at the 300 level provides students with a choice of advanced topics in their field of interest.  

*The Bachelor of Professional Accounting does not have any accredited exit points. Students are only eligible to receive the Bachelor once all 24 required units are successfuly completed.
